Life is an ever-evolving journey, and sometimes we find ourselves in a rut, stuck in patterns that no longer serve us. What is your pattern in your relationships? With your diet and exercise? With your work productivity? It's essential to recognize when we're in a cycle that's holding us back, preventing us from reaching our full potential or living a fulfilling life, and to understand that we can change the pattern. Here are three common reasons you might find yourself stuck and actionable steps to move beyond them. I invite you to take more than a quick glance at these and sit down with a journal to really consider them.
1. Identifying with an Old Pattern and Getting Old Results
One of the most significant barriers to personal growth is identifying too strongly with past patterns and behaviors. We often fall into comfortable routines or ways of thinking that once served us but are no longer beneficial. What no longer works can easily become our default. The danger lies in holding onto these patterns, afraid to break free and embrace change. Personal growth is essential to living an extraordinary life. If we expect an old standard of ourselves that we have outgrown or run a pattern of stress that no longer serves us, then we limit our experience of life and wonder why it doesn’t feel better.
Recognizing that we are stuck in a pattern is the essential first step. Often, we are not even aware that the way we think about, feel, or do things is a pattern. We think it is just life. Through my own coaching journey I discovered thought processes and ways of being that really hampered my life. Once I uncovered them, I could change them. Without doing the work, I was stuck living with the same results in my relationships, work, and life. What patterns are you running?
How to Move Forward:
Self-awareness: Recognize the patterns that are no longer beneficial. Take an honest look at your habits, thoughts, and behaviors. Understand that you are not defined by your past, and you have the power to change. Even in the most challenging situations you have a choice in how you view them. What patterns do you have in your thoughts about yourself?
Challenge your beliefs: Question the beliefs and assumptions that are keeping you stuck. Are they still relevant and true for your current life? Challenge yourself to adopt new perspectives and beliefs that align with your growth and aspirations. Who do you want to be? What kind of life do you want to live? What belief could you adopt that supports you? Write it down and read it daily.
Step out of your comfort zone: Embrace change and take small steps outside your comfort zone. This could be trying a new way of doing something small, creating a new expectation of yourself, or simply altering your daily routine. By doing this, you'll start creating new experiences and breaking free from old patterns.
2. Not Gaining New Knowledge to Propel You Forward
In a rapidly changing world, acquiring new knowledge and skills is crucial to stay inspired and adapt to changes in life. When we stop learning and growing intellectually, we risk becoming stagnant and falling behind. Life gets dull. We more easily resign ourselves to the way it is, which blocks motivation. When we assume that we “have tried everything” or that we know everything there is to know, we cut ourselves off from sparking new ideas, possibilities, and inspiration.
How to Move Forward:
Stay curious: Cultivate curiosity about yourself, about new ways of thinking and doing things, and about what you can learn. Ask questions, explore new topics, and engage in discussions. It is easy to suggest, yet it takes conscious effort to do this. What can you learn if you become more curious about yourself, others, and the world around you? The more curious you are, the more opportunities you'll have to learn and grow. Hint: Curiosity does not include judgment.
Drop your judgment: The fastest path to cutting yourself off from growing is to be judgmental. Interestingly, you might not think that you are judgmental. Check in with yourself. What do you judge yourself harshly about? Others? What does your judgment protect you from? Is it working?
Connect with others: Engage with a community and ask for help. When we think we should do it all alone, we are often setting ourselves up to fail. Investing in help, connecting with others to learn and share knowledge, and talking about the changes we want to make can elicit fresh insights new opportunities. Getting around inspired people creates more energy and sparks something new.
3. Not Reflecting on Your Progress Regularly
Reflecting on your progress and experiences is a crucial step in personal growth. Without regular self-reflection, it's easy to get stuck in a cycle of repetition or not fully appreciating how far you've come. We often think that progress will feel different than it does, so noticing it can take deliberate reflection.
How to Move Forward:
Journaling: Dedicate time each day or week to reflect on your experiences, goals, and achievements. Write down what you've learned and how you can apply those lessons moving forward. Research shows that journaling improves mental and physical health, as well as memory, relationships and productivity. That's a big outcome from a simple action!
Celebrate milestones: Acknowledge your growth! Recognize and appreciate your progress along the way. This positive reinforcement will motivate you to continue pushing forward and allow you to notice your progress. This is where momentum is born.
Seek feedback: Ask for feedback from trusted friends, mentors, or colleagues. Their perspectives can offer valuable insights into your progress and areas for improvement. This is easier to do when you have been practicing non-judgment. Notice the theme of connection here. When we hide, avoid, or dismiss others, we cut ourselves off from growth. It takes a level of maturity to accept feedback. The more you practice not judging, the easier it will be to accept feedback and grow from it.
Breaking free from old patterns and embracing growth requires dedication, self-awareness, and a willingness to challenge yourself. Moving past the fear of failure and into a quest for growth is powerful! By recognizing your barriers and taking proactive steps to overcome them, you can unlock your true potential and pave the way for a fulfilling, enriching life. If you are repeating the same struggles over and over, recognize that there are ways to move out of them, even if you think you have tried everything. Spend the next month reviewing the steps above and reach out for help if you feel stuck! Growth is a journey, and every step you take towards it is a step towards a brighter, more prosperous future. I love being on this journey together!
Do you want to move forward faster? Having a coach is one of the most powerful ways to unlock something better. When I got a coach, I knew what my life was going to be like in 3 months if I didn’t do it. The same. What I didn’t know was the breakthroughs and shifts that would change my life if I got a coach. It was the best decision I have ever made. This work means so much to me and I'd love to share it with you if it fits with where you are.
